LUCI "opens up the envelope" of who can qualify for power mobility

Stop asking, “Can they drive without LUCI?” Start asking, “What can they achieve with it?” Some payors and clinicians still think needing a little extra help for power mobility means you shouldn't be driving at all.

At LUCI, we disagree. Following that logic: 

  • A client who cannot independently operate a power wheelchair without a sip-and-puff controller would be deemed ineligible for power mobility.

  • A client who cannot ambulate without a prosthetic limb would be deemed ineligible for walking.

  • An individual who cannot meet visual acuity requirements without corrective lenses would be deemed ineligible for a driver evaluation or license.

Drawing on today's body of evidence, this paper explores how LUCI embodies the very purpose of assistive technology: to bridge the gap between a person's functional limitations and the activities they need to perform and the life they choose to live.
